How Pond and Waterfall Construction Works: From First Call to First Splash

A plain-English walk-through of building a pond: design, digging, liner, plumbing, stone, planting and startup.

Design and layout

Every pond starts with a conversation and a walk through the yard. We discuss size, style, sun and the view, then mark the shape on the ground with paint or a hose so you can see it.

Locating and digging

Before digging, 811 is called and underground lines are marked. We cut the pond with shelves and a stable slope, shape the waterfall base and set aside soil for berms and fill.

Underlayment and liner

A smooth, clean base protects the liner. Underlayment goes down first, then the liner, which is folded carefully and lapped up behind the waterfall and edge.

Plumbing and filtration

The skimmer, pump, filter and return lines are set. Valves and unions go where they can be reached. Electrical connections are made by a qualified electrician.

Stone and plants

Boulders and gravel go in, edges are dressed and plants are set at the right depths. This is the part that makes the pond look natural.

Startup

The pond is filled, treated and tested. We tune the flow, explain the controls and leave you with a care guide. Fish are added after the water is ready.

Our advice in one sentence

Good planning, a protected liner and careful plumbing matter more than any single decoration.

Questions

Quick answers.

How long does construction take?

Many ponds take a few days to a week. Large or complex builds take longer.

Will my lawn be damaged?

Some disturbance is normal. We protect routes and repair the lawn afterward.

When can I add fish?

After the water is treated and stable, and ideally after a short settling period.
