Mechanical and biological filtration sized to the pond and the fish so the water stays clear all season.
Filtration is what separates a pond that stays clear from one that fights you every month. Mechanical filters catch solid waste before it breaks down, and biological filters give helpful bacteria a home to turn ammonia into harmless nitrate.
We choose and install filter systems based on the pond volume, the number of fish and how the pond is used. Options include skimmers with built-in filter mats, external pressurized filters, gravity-fed waterfall filters, drum filters and bog filters. Each has its place, and we explain the tradeoffs.
Mechanical filtration removes particles. Biological filtration handles dissolved waste. A filter that does only one of the two leaves the other problem untouched.
A filter rated for a certain pond size assumes a light fish load. Heavily stocked ponds need a larger filter or a second one. We size for the fish you have and the fish you hope to have.
A filter that is hard to clean gets ignored. We place and plumb filters so cleaning takes minutes, and we show you how to do it.
Filtration can be added in stages as the pond and fish grow. We plan the plumbing so a second filter is easy to add later.

Plants help but do not replace a filter in a fish pond. Fish waste is usually more than plants alone can handle.
It depends on the filter and the load. Many need a rinse every couple of weeks in summer.
Only gently rinse it in pond water. Scrubbing it clean kills the bacteria you need.
