Pond Liner Types Guide

EPDM rubber, RPE, PVC and preformed shells compared: how long each lasts, how they handle and where each fits.

The liner is the most important hidden part of a pond. Flexible rubber liners are the most popular for garden ponds and water features because they stretch gently, resist sun and are easy to repair. Other liners and rigid shells have their roles.

EPDM is a synthetic rubber used widely for ponds. It is flexible, remains soft in cold weather and holds up to sun. PVC is lighter and lower in price but can stiffen and crack with age. RPE is a reinforced polyethylene that is tough and strong but less flexible. Preformed shells are rigid and quick to set but limit design.

EPDM rubber is the usual favorite for flexibility and life.
