Define what you want
Write down what you imagine: size, style, waterfall or not, fish or no fish. Include photos of ponds you like and photos of your yard. A clear description makes the estimate more accurate.
Ask about experience
Ask how many ponds they have built, what sizes and whether they build the type you want. A contractor who builds koi ponds every month will do it better than one who tried it once.
Ask to see past work
Photos help, and visiting a pond that is several years old shows how the work ages. Ask for references from similar projects and call them.
Ask about requirements and coverage
Rules differ by city, county and project type. Ask what permits or rules apply to your job and what coverage the contractor carries. Keep a record of the answer.
Ask about the hidden parts
The liner, underlayment, plumbing and filtration are the parts you will not see. Ask how they handle them and what brands and materials they use.
Get it in writing
A written estimate lists scope, dimensions, materials, equipment, schedule and payment terms. It also states what happens if rock or water is found.
Hire the builder who asks the most questions about how you will use the pond.
