Skimmer Installation

Skimmer boxes that pull floating leaves and debris off the surface and into a basket before they sink.

Leaves that sink into a pond turn into muck, and muck turns into algae. A skimmer catches floating debris before it sinks. It pulls surface water over a weir into a basket, where you can lift it out in seconds.

We install skimmers in new ponds and retrofit them into existing ones. The box is set at the correct level, sealed to the liner and plumbed to the pump or filter. We position it on the downwind side of the pond so the breeze pushes debris toward it.

Placement matters

A skimmer on the upwind side catches less. We study the breeze and the shape of the pond and put the skimmer where debris naturally drifts.

Set at the right level

A skimmer that is too high leaves a gap and loses water over the edge. Too low and it pulls too little. We set the weir at the normal water level and build the edge stone around it.

Easy basket access

The basket should be easy to reach and empty. We hide the lid under stone or plants and leave a clear way to lift it out.

Skimmer and pump together

The pump draws through the skimmer, so the two must be matched. Too strong a pump starves the skimmer and too weak a pump gives poor skimming.

Questions

Skimmers FAQ

Can a skimmer be added to an existing pond?

Yes. We cut into the edge, set the box and reconnect the liner.

How big a skimmer do I need?

Skimmer size depends on pond size and the pump flow. We match the two.

Will a skimmer catch fish?

No. The weir and basket are designed to keep fish out, and a good design is safe for them.

Do I need more than one skimmer?

Bigger ponds or ponds under trees may benefit from two.

Does my skimmer match my pump?

We match them so water pulls evenly over the weir.
